Introduction

The Resource Development department at the Aga Khan University primarily focuses on cultivating donor relations and all things pertaining to fundraising for the University and the Hospital. The department aims to develop mutually beneficial relationships with its various diverse supporters globally, and aids the University in its mission through generating philanthropic and other financial support. The Resource Development team works with donors to continue building a positive impact within the lives of patients, and the greater community, and strives to continually increase the impact that it has in the future. 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Prospect Research and Portfolio Management, the Assistant Manager is responsible for providing detailed research on past, current and prospective donors to determine capacity, philanthropic inclination, and affinity in support of the fundraising activities of the University; and for tracking prospect and donor activity towards fundraising targets. The specific responsibilities are:

  • undertaking pro-active research on individuals, corporations, foundations and trusts using a variety of resources: including news and media services, biographical information, financial databases, directories, online resources, specialized services, etc. 
  • verifying, analysing and synthesising accumulated information to assess personal and professional networks, financial capacity, philanthropic inclinations, and affinity to AKU and/or the work of the University  
  • preparing detailed research profiles, briefings and reports on current and prospective donors for fundraisers, senior leadership and other individuals in advance of fundraising meetings and events
  • analysing, segmenting and preparing detailed reports drawing upon information held in the University’s database (Raiser’s Edge)
  • working with fundraising staff, University leadership, faculty and volunteers to continuously identify new prospective donors for the University and to update existing information
  • ensuring the upkeep of the database by continuously reviewing, updating and correcting information on individuals, corporations, foundations and trusts. Using agreed protocols, work to update information held in the donor database for all of these groups
  • partnering with fundraising staff by providing and receiving new information on donors and prospective donors, and by actively contributing to fundraising strategies for donor cultivation
  • building relationships with colleagues across Resource Development and the wider University to maintain an awareness of their activities, goals and University priorities
  • providing research and background information for other activities in support of fundraising and the work of Resource Development
  • overseeing and managing research materials, resources, on-line services and subscriptions related to the work of prospect research 
  • providing guest lists, event briefings and other reports as required.

Requirements

You should have:

  • a university degree; preferably a Master’s degree in business-related discipline and/or strong familiarity of the business environment in South Asia 
  • an interest in, and understanding of, higher education, philanthropy and fundraising and the subject areas of the University
  • at least 3-5 years of work experience with two year’s prospect research or similar research experience with experience of using fundraising databases such as the Raiser’s Edge
  • an experience of cloud-based applications such as Google Drive, Sharepoint, OneDrive and/or Microsoft Teams
  • the ability to analyse and synthesize information and data from a wide variety of sources, and to present the resulting information to a range of audiences in a clear and accurate manner 
  • excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • flexibility and an ability to deliver work to tight deadlines
  • experience of Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel, and web browsers 
  • excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage a busy and diverse workload
  • the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion
  • a highly professional manner.
