Introduction

The Outreach and Research Programme of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health has more than fifteen community-based field sites across Pakistan (including four in Karachi) and focuses on research for betterment of women and child health. The Department has a Nutritional Research Laboratory as well as an Infectious Disease Research Laboratory that cater to the needs of its research projects. It has well-acclaimed work to its credit both at the national and international level.

The department is carrying out a research study about Severe SARS-CoV2-related disease in low- and middle-income country (LMICs) children aged 0-18 years. This is a multi-country observational study in a network of hospitals and in Pakistan, it will be conducted at five sites in Pakistan including Karachi (AKU, NICH, NICVD), Lahore (Children’s Hospital) and Rawalpindi (Benazir Bhutto Hospital). The overall aim is to understand the clinical characteristics of SARS-CoV2-related disease in neonates, children and adolescents aged 0-19 years presenting to hospital in LMICs. It will be conducted over a period of 12 months and there will be five key activities; (i) Development of research standard operating procedures; (ii) Training in research standard operating procedures; (iii) Data collection via extraction of data from the medical record and during monthly telephonic or face-to-face interviews with the parent/guardian; (iv) Analysis of data; (v) Reporting.

Responsibilities

You will be expected to:
  • independently write detailed notes on interviews and observation visits
  • visit different households in the pommunittes.to ensure succcss~ul completion of data in their areas including qualily control
  • manage field work process to ensure effective use of time
  • attend project-related training sessions and workshops
  • follow and ensure field implementation of project-related SOPs and guidelines as defined in the research project.

Requirements

You should have:
  • at least an Intermediate certificate 
  • preferably one year of relevant experience in healthcare or research, particularly having some experience of dealing with people
  • basic research and good interpersonal skills, particularly communication skills
  • good command over the use of computer applications, particularly MS Office
  • resilience and ability to cope-up with work pressure and meet stringent timelines
  • willingness to work in community setting and travel to field sites.
 This is a close-ended position to be based at Karachi.
