Professor Muhammad Wasay has been named a fellow of the prestigious Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS). He has also become the first-ever neurologist to be named to the academy.
Only scientists of the highest merit who have made truly outstanding contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge are elected as fellows of the Islamabad-based PAS, a non-governmental body of distinguished scientists from across Pakistan which serves to advise the government on scientific development in the country.
Commenting on the news, Dr Wasay said, “I am honoured to become a fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. This achievement will enable me to continue to promote research in neurology and to advocate for a better understanding of the public health impact of diseases affecting the mind, brain, spinal cord and nervous system.”
Besides his work as a professor of neurology at Aga Khan University, Dr Wasay also chairs the advocacy committee of the World Federation of Neurology and serves as the president of the Neurology Awareness and Research foundation.
Dr Wasay has previously been awarded a gold medal from PAS for his research insights on stroke and tuberculosis of the central nervous system. He has also received several international awards for educational, research and advocacy work including the Advocacy Leader of the Year Award from the American Academy of Neurology.
