For the second consecutive year, the Aga Khan University (AKU) has been recognised by the Society of Research Administrators International (SRAI), underscoring the University's growing influence and excellence in research support and leadership. Adnan Altaf, Senior Manager at AKU's Research Office in Pakistan, has been named a 2025 honouree in SRAI's prestigious Future of the Field programme.
Selected from a competitive pool of global nominees, Adnan is recognised among the next generation of leaders shaping the future of research administration. SRAI is the world's leading network of research management professionals, with members across more than 40 countries. Through education, professional development, and knowledge-sharing, it advances research excellence across institutions and regions.
Its Future of the Field initiative honours early- to mid-career professionals who demonstrate innovation, leadership, and impact—both institutionally and globally. AKU received the same distinction in 2024 when Melaine D'Cruze of the Research Office was selected, making this back-to-back recognition a significant milestone for the University.
“In a field as dynamic as research administration, the need for visionary, adaptable leaders has never been greater," said Dara C. Little, President of SRAI. “The recipients of Future of the Field are not only navigating complexity—they are driving the profession forward."
Adnan's entry into research administration was grounded in financial management and shaped through years of experience on international health and education projects. At AKU, he has played a key role in professionalising research support services, strengthening compliance systems, and leading capacity-building initiatives across the institution.
Reflecting on the award, Adnan shared, “I remain committed to advancing research administration as both a profession and a catalyst for equitable global impact. This recognition is also a testament to the incredible work of colleagues across our research ecosystem who make complex, meaningful research possible every day."
In addition to this honour, Adnan received the 2025 SRAI John Robinson Travel Scholarship, awarded to a select few whose applications demonstrate exceptional promise and merit.
Commenting on the recognition, Dr Salim Virani, Vice Provost of Research and Professor of Medicine at AKU, said, “Global engagement through SRAI enhances AKU's ability to serve research communities with excellence and integrity. Adnan's recognition not only reflects his leadership but also strengthens our capacity to integrate global best practices and deliver research that drives meaningful change. That two of our professionals have received this honour in consecutive years is a powerful testament to our institutional momentum."
The 2025 Future of the Field honourees also include professionals from the University of California, University of Zimbabwe, Kenyatta Hospital, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, and Vital Pakistan Trust.
