Dr Zeenat Sulaiman Khan, an alumna of the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery, Pakistan, has been elected to the Governing Council of the International Hospital Federation (IHF).
Established in 1929, the IHF is a not-for-profit organization based in Switzerland that represents hospitals and health systems around the world. It describes its goal as providing “members with a platform for knowledge exchange and networking with different actors in the health sector, to improve the standard, quality, and level of service delivery.”
A member of AKU’s Class of 1987, Dr Khan is currently the Regional CEO of the Aga Khan Health Services, East Africa (AKHS-EA), which provides health care to more than a million patients annually. She is also the Global Head of Quality, Clinical Programmes and Projects at AKHS.
Dr Khan is responsible for various AKHS infrastructure and facility-development projects across East Africa. She spearheaded a comprehensive expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital campus in Dar es Salaam and is currently overseeing the expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu, and the expansion of the oncology programme of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam. In April 2022, she was presented with the Women Leaders in NGOs Award by Women in Management Africa for her exceptional leadership skills and contributions to health care in Africa.
“As a woman leader, you must be persistent,” Dr Khan said. “There is no substitute for hard work. I started as a registered nurse. I got my degrees, changed my thinking, learned constantly, and I think it’s important to speak up and not shy away from putting your points forward.”
