The Aga Khan University (AKU) has launched a students’ association in Kenya that seeks to give students an interactive platform to engage the university community.
Aga Khan University Students' Association (AKUSA), will be governed by a Students’ Executive Council and will comprise of students from the Medical College, School of Nursing and Midwifery and Graduate School of Media and Communications.
The Association will provide students an opportunity to actively engage directly in the governance, growth and development of the University.
Speaking at the unveiling of the AKUSA constitution, Dr Anthony Ochola, the interim Chairperson called on the students to play an active role in the growth of the University.
“We all have an obligation to leave behind a stronger organization for those joining the university. AKUSA will cover every student enabling feedback across the university and equitable distribution of resources. It is also a good platform for students to hone their leadership skills; we want to learn to lead through AKUSA,” he said.
AKU President Firoz Rasul called on the students to use the Association as an avenue for mentorship.
“Student organizations have a crucial contribution to the wellbeing of a student. They enhance the student experience, preparing them for a life in a democratic society. Your fellow student in AKUSA should be your teacher and mentor, and vice-versa,” he said.
Other speakers at the unveiling included the academic deans who challenged the students not only to influence those in AKU, but the community they serve.
“This is a perfect opportunity for you to go beyond the confines of your school, network with students from other AKU schools and learn what they are doing. Such bodies give students an opportunity for knowledge sharing with students from the other universities as well,” said Prof Lukoye Atwoli, Dean Medical College in East Africa.
