Media Innovation Centre’s Innovators-in-Residence team, AM Media, opened its doors to the world when they officially launched their startup, Debunk Media. Comprised of journalists, data scientists, filmmakers, illustrators, animators and even a medical doctor, the team seeks to combine their expertise to tell stories and make sense of the big issues affecting their audiences.
“I am very excited to launch our start up today. This has been months of planning and putting together a great team to deliver fresh content to the public,” said Asha Mwilu, team lead and founder, Debunk Media. Doubling up as lead content editor, Asha Mwilu looks to use her experience in the media industry to share content that speaks to the ever changing consumer landscape.
“In the recent years, we have seen media consumption trends changing rapidly creating a growingly demand for content that reads to these trends. Debunk Media will create content that speak to Kenyans and help them make sense of every big event that happens in their lives,” added Asha.
In a tweet, Asha expressed her professional awe of the team that makes Debunk. Quoting, she noted, “It's one thing to have a dream. It's another to have a team of young and passionate creatives and scientists join in that dream.”
Her team includes Dr. Patrick Gatua, a medical doctor and new-age digital journalists, Sheila Munyiwa, trained producer and director who has worked on TV ads plus show for local and international productions, Peris Mureithi producer specialising on documentaries and films, Wakini Njogu data journalists and producer, Whitney Muhadi a creative audio-visualist and Charlie Karumi an actor, radio host and TV host.
Led by the Director, Ms Njoki Chege, Innovation Centre team surprised Debunk with a cake to commemorate their launch after months of hard work and never ending training. Sharing her excitement, Njoki mentioned the commitment to support other media star- ups in the region.
“We are excited to see Debunk launch their start-up. It has been months of continued planning, training, consulting and to see it all piece together, is an achievement for them and us. As a team, we are here to help media start-ups grow through our Innovators-in-Residence program that admits 2 teams every year,” added Njoki.
