On the global Digital Learning Day, February 27th, AKU celebrated the work of AKU faculty members who are working to improve the quality of teaching and learning through the use of technology. Digital learning is the use of a wide-range of digital technologies in a meaningful way to strengthen a student's learning experience. The goal is to engage students, personalize their learning experience and enable anywhere, anytime learning opportunities to ensure all students reach their full potential.
Digital Learning Day started in 2012 as a worldwide celebration of learning with technology. The Blended and Digital Learning Team organized virtual events so that participants could join in from their offices, clinics, and homes.
The day was celebrated by having faculty members who are using technology in teaching and learning share their experiences and showcase how essential technology is to help students learn in live talks. Dr. Sadia Fatima from the medical college and Ms. Vernoica Sarungi from Institute for Educational Development East Africa spoke about their experiences, followed by a Q and A. The sessions were attended by faculty and staff members from various entities across continents.
"Your presentation was superb!!! I had faced some challenges, and I learned some new points GREAT!!!." Dr Rafat Jan - Professor, School of Nursing & Midwifery
"Thank you so much for this great presentation! We have learnt about so many new possibilities and looking forward to trying these out with the support of the BDL Team." AKU – Tanzania
Learning stories of the faculty members were shared to inspire faculty and staff as they plan a new online or blended course or integrate a digital tool in their face-to-face teaching. Alongside digital teaching tips on “Capturing Online Learner Engagement" and “Designing a Blended Course". Everyone was invited to share their experiences, hopes and fears of using technology on a collaborative wall.
Celebration of Digital Learning is not a one-day event: it is celebrated every day whenever a teacher uses innovative teaching practices and digital pedagogies.
