The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) held a staff and faculty retreat on January 12- 13 2018, in the context of ongoing structural and functional reconfiguration of the department.
The department now comprises five technical units, namely: epidemiology and biostatistics; non-communicable diseases and mental health; environmental and occupational health; population and reproductive health; and health policy and management. Each unit will work in three areas: education and training, research and development, and the newly established area of public health practice.
The retreat aimed to unify the department around the new vision for CHS, to improve team work and communication, and to bond and network better to achieve that vision. The retreat participants worked towards the development of strategies and a road map that would guide the department’s work for the next few years. Dr Sameen Siddiqi, the newly appointed Chair of CHS, encouraged the team to engage with and motivate each other to ensure that the department is able to excel in its mandate.
