AKU-ISMC were privileged to host Prof Aaron Hughes from the University of Rochester in the United States on Monday 13 November for his lecture entitled The Study of Islam in the Age of Trump, Notes from the Field.
Prof Hughes unpicked the issues surrounding Islamic Studies in the West. Acknowledging that all academic production has a political context, he highlighted in the role both of right-wing groups like CampusWatch and of apologetic approaches to Islamic studies in reifying Islam. He spoke about the historical significance of his own grandfather, one of the first Muslims to arrive in Canada in the late nineteenth century as an illustration of how heritages and ideas are disseminated beyond single communities in a cosmopolitan environment.
