The Department for Educational Development (DED) at the Aga Khan University (AKU) organised its 1st Educational Research Day at the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education, AKU, for health care professionals, educationists, students and alumni.
The event provided a platform for dissemination of research across the entire continuum of education in all AKU Pakistan campuses-including the Faculty of Health Sciences, Institute for Educational Development and Examination Board-with special focus on health professions education (HPE) as well as education in general.
The announcement of the Educational Research Day received a very enthusiastic response from faculty which was evident in the fact that a total of sixty (60) abstracts were accepted from all disciplines of health professions education.
The event’s proceedings commenced with a welcome from Dr Farhat Abbas, Dean, Medical College, followed by an overview of the objectives for the event by Dr Muhammad Tariq, Interim Associate Dean, Education, FHS. Dr Tariq reflected that, “Research and publication are the best platforms for health professionals to receive endorsement for their work. We must do all that we can, to provide them with the opportunities to disseminate their innovations and ideas.”
Professor Lubna Baig, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University and Dean of APPNA Institute of Public Health, was invited as the key note speaker for the event. Her presentation highlighted the trends, issues and priorities in health professions research. In her closing remarks she said, “In order to ensure that there is a growth in HPE research, we need to design and implement a system whereby we establish a provision of funding for HPE research, while at the same time offering the necessary support to faculty. Allocating dedicated faculty time to research and celebrating their educational research accomplishments are some of the ways in which we can enable and encourage our faculty’s research productivity.”
The event also featured fifteen (15) oral presentations on the themes of teaching and learning, assessment, reflective practice, simulation, faculty development and ethical issues. Additionally, a summary of the five best posters-out of fifty (50) posters on display- presented by Dr Salman Kirmani, Chair, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, was the highlight of the day. Awards were given for the best poster and best oral presentation.
The organizing committee lead by Dr Muhammad Tariq, included Dr Sonia Ijaz Haider, Dr Tabassum Zehra, Dr Shazia Babar, Dr Misbah Mannan and Mr Anil Khowaja. All those present at the event were highly appreciative of the time and effort the committee dedicated to making the event a success. In the years to come, DED hopes for the Educational Research Day to become an annual activity to promote educational research.
