Dr Bhutta has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Institute of Health (NIH), Pakistan. The appointment was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and notified by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination on June 11, 2026. Prof Bhutta was selected from among the members of the NIH Board of Governors under Section 6(4) of the National Institute of Health (Reorganisation) Act, 2021.
The constitution of the NIH Board of Governors marks an important step in strengthening the governance of one of Pakistan's leading public health institutions. The newly constituted board includes senior public health, medical, and institutional leaders, alongside ex-officio members, and brings renewed focus to NIH's role in advancing national health priorities.
Dr Bhutta's appointment recognises his longstanding contribution to public health, research, policy, and institutional leadership in Pakistan and globally.
