Researchers from Aga Khan University (AKU) were among those honoured by Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC) at a national ceremony celebrating distinguished researchers whose work has elevated the global profile of Pakistani science and scholarship.
Held at NED University of Engineering and Technology in Karachi, the event recognised researchers through HEC's National Research Programme for Universities (NRPU), the Stanford University/Elsevier World's Top 2% Scientists List, and the Pakistan Academy of Sciences Gold Medal. The ceremony celebrated researchers whose work is advancing knowledge, driving innovation, and strengthening Pakistan's research ecosystem, while reaffirming HEC's commitment to supporting research excellence, commercialisation, and impactful innovation across the country's universities.
The recognition follows the inclusion of 27 AKU faculty members and one alumnus in the World's Top 2% Scientists List for 2024. Published by Stanford University and Elsevier, the annual ranking identifies the world's most influential researchers based on the impact and quality of their scholarly publications.
AKU's strong representation reflects the University's growing contribution to high-impact research across a broad range of disciplines. From improving health outcomes and advancing clinical science to informing policy and strengthening health systems, AKU researchers continue to generate evidence that benefits communities in Pakistan and beyond.
"This recognition reflects not only the exceptional talent of our faculty but also AKU's sustained commitment to creating an environment where research excellence can thrive," said Professor Salim S. Virani, Vice Provost Research at AKU. "National recognition such as this reflects the progress we are making through sustained investment in research, collaboration, and innovation."
The ceremony also aimed to inspire the next generation of researchers by recognising excellence that addresses national priorities while contributing to global scientific advancement. It brought together senior government officials, academic leaders, and researchers, including Governor of Sindh Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi, Provincial Minister Sardar Muhammad Ismail Rahoo, HEC Chairman Prof. Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, Coordinator of the Prime Minister's Youth Programme (Sindh) Dr Fahad Shafiq, renowned scientist Prof Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, vice chancellors, and faculty from universities across Pakistan.
