The Aga Khan University (AKU) Medical College, East Africa has received joint accreditation from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and the Commission for University Education (CUE) after achieving an overall score of 92.9 per cent in a comprehensive regulatory review.
The outcome reaffirms the quality of AKU’s medical education, training and research, and authorises the Medical College to continue offering the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme. Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi has also received full accreditation as a teaching hospital for the programme.
The accreditation follows a joint inspection conducted by KMPDC and CUE.
“We are immensely proud of this achievement. The 92.9 per cent score reflects years of sustained investment in academic excellence, research, innovation and the learning environment we provide our students,” said Prof. Lukoye Atwoli, Dean of the Medical College, East Africa.
“More importantly, it recognises the dedication of our faculty, students, staff and clinical teams, and affirms our commitment to preparing physicians who can respond to the evolving healthcare needs of communities in the region and beyond.”
The recognition of both the Medical College and Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi reflects AKU’s integrated approach to medical education. It brings together classroom learning, research and supervised clinical training, enabling students to develop the knowledge, judgement and practical skills required to provide high-quality, compassionate care.
During the review, the joint inspection team assessed key aspects of the programme, including curriculum delivery, quality assurance systems, faculty qualifications, the research environment, student welfare, learning resources and clinical training opportunities.
The exercise also served as a pre-inspection ahead of the fourth East African Community joint inspection of new and existing medical and dental schools, scheduled for the coming months.
“This result is not an end point; it is an encouragement to keep raising the bar,” Prof. Atwoli added. “We will build on the strengths recognised in the report and act on its recommendations so that our students continue to receive an education that meets the highest professional and academic standards.”
Through this accreditation, AKU strengthens its commitment to educating future physicians, advancing relevant research and supporting better health outcomes in East Africa and beyond.
