The Aga Khan University is taking a bold step toward making learning more intentional, relevant and connected to the world its graduates will serve.
AKU's Network of Quality Teaching and Learning (QTL_net) has launched the Outcome-Based Education Curriculum Alignment and Mapping workshop, known as OBE CAMP. The inaugural workshop was held from April 20 to 22, 2026, in Karachi, bringing together members of the Curriculum Advisory Committee (CAC) and programme representatives from across the University.
Rather than treating curriculum review as a technical exercise, OBE CAMP created space for faculty and academic leaders to ask an important question: Are our programmes truly preparing students with the knowledge, skills and values they need to thrive beyond the classroom?
Led by Dr Khairulnissa Ajani, Director of Teaching and Learning, QTL, alongside the Teaching and Learning team, and co-facilitated by Dr Mohamed Shahid Shamim, Associate Dean at the Medical College, Pakistan, the workshop was held under the leadership of Vice Provost Dr Jane Rarieya. It also directly supports AKU's strategic plan by strengthening the University's commitment to high-quality, student-centred and outcome-driven education.
Over three days, participants worked through a practical and collaborative process to review and align Programme Learning Outcomes, Course Learning Outcomes, assessments and instructional strategies. The aim was to ensure that what students are taught, how they are taught and how they are assessed are all clearly connected to AKU's graduate attributes and the real-world capabilities expected of AKU graduates.
The workshop was hands-on, peer-led and deliberately reflective. Faculty examined their programmes through an outcome-based lens, identifying where learning outcomes were strong, where gaps existed and how courses could be better aligned to support meaningful student learning.
The experience culminated in a multidisciplinary showcase, where participants presented their curriculum maps and received real-time feedback from peers and University leaders. This final session highlighted the value of bringing different disciplines together to learn from one another and strengthen curriculum design across AKU.
For QTL_net, the first OBE CAMP marks the beginning of a broader University-wide journey. Following the success of the inaugural cohort in Karachi, plans are underway to expand the workshop to CAC members and programme representatives in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
