Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH, N) is pleased to announce that 10 of its outreach medical centres have obtained SafeCare certification, indicating adherence to the highest standards of care.
SafeCare standards are divided into 13 different categories with over 650 standards, covering the full range of medical to non-medical aspects of care, Accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care External Evaluation Association (ISQuaEEA).
The audit classifies a facility's performance against the SafeCare standards and awards it a certificate of improvement, ranging from Level 1 (very modest quality) to Level 5 (highest quality).
“Our centres went through a rigorous audit in April 2024 to evaluate their performance against the set SafeCare Standards," said Khurram Jamal, Chief Operations Officer, AKUHN Outreach Network. “All the centres were awarded level 5 demonstrating the highest level of performance."
The initial list of accredited outreach medical centers includes Akai Medical Centre, Kenol Medical Centre, Peponi Specialty and Executive Clinic, Karen Specialty and Executive Clinic, Roysambu Dialysis and Medical Centre, Mountain View Medical Centre, Easteligh Medical Centre, Ruiru Medical Centre and Narok Medical Centre.
“Following this milestone, we will now begin the certification process for another set of centres. Our goal is to ensure that all our centres are SafeCare certified in the near future," said Rashid Khalani, the hospital's Chief Executive Officer.
“Quality is a key underpinning of the Aga Khan Development Network and a key value of Aga Khan University Hospital. As a teaching health system, the importance of being trained in a high-quality healthcare system cannot be understated. This certification will go a long way in reaffirming our commitment to our patients that we are committed to the highest standards of care at every level distance notwithstanding."
This certification adds to a long list of international accreditations and certifications at AKUH, N. The hospital was the first in the region to receive JCI hospital accreditation in 2013, and it has been reaccredited every three years since.
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) recognized the hospital's laboratory in 2018, recognizing its excellence in laboratory services. The Joint Commission International (JCI) certified the hospital as a centre of excellence for the management of heart attacks in 2020, making it the first in Sub-Saharan Africa to receive this designation. A year later, the JCI certified AKUH, N as a centre of excellence for stroke management, making it Africa's first hospital to accomplish this milestone.
