A generous donation has enabled the University to support a student enrolled in AKU’s Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene, ASDH, degree programme for the first time, through a named endowed scholarship.
The Dr Parveen Kanji Endowed Scholarship Fund for Dental Hygiene, which honours the contributions of a beloved lecturer in obstetrics and gynecology at Aga Khan University, will cover the tuition costs of one student in perpetuity, and may support more students over time as the endowment grows. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic performance and financial need.
The ASDH is a two-year degree programme recognised by the Higher Education Commission in Pakistan, focusing on a competency-based, collaborative model of educating primary healthcare professionals. Students learn the practice of dental hygiene and gain invaluable clinical expertise supported by rotations in oral surgery, oncology, periodontics, orthodontics, prosthodontics, and restorative dentistry.
Pakistan has a critical rate of oral cancer, and AKU is leading an effort to educate some of the country’s first dental hygienists to address it proactively. AKU is committed to training dental hygiene graduates to competently provide comprehensive patient-centered dental care in a professional, compassionate and ethical way.
Students on the ASDH programme are trained in AKU’s one-of-a-kind, high-fidelity dental simulation lab. The facility is equipped with 17 state-of-the-art ‘phantom heads’ – patient mannequins designed to mimic the characteristics of a real-life clinical environment. Each mannequin set-up contains the full range of dental instruments and computer-based feedback facilities needed to help students improve their skills.
The contribution and legacy of the late Dr Parveen Kanji, as a donor and professional, stand amongst the University's most generous supporters. President Rasul thanked the family of Dr Parveen Kanji for their vision and gift, which will continue to support the brightest and best students to receive quality education at the Aga Khan University.
