John Muthoni, a Standard Group journalist and a student of the Masters in Digital Journalism Programme (MADJ) offered by the Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) at Aga Khan University (AKU) bagged an award at the Media Council of Kenya's ninth Annual Journalism Excellence Awards 2021 (AJEA).
A student in the programme's fourth cohort, John scooped the Governance Reporting Award for his story on 'Heir to Sh2 billion estate dragged through courts for 24 years', and was a finalist for the Gender Reporting Award for his story on 'Divorce formalities don't have to tie you down', both in the print category.
“I am excited and grateful that I won the governance award as it means a lot to me and came at a time that I had just healed from Covid-19. I am grateful to my lecturers for the training and inspiration," he said.
He aspires to create a multimedia story to include a podcast and video in his next submission using skills garnered from the MADJ classes.
The awards are a continuous annual celebration of journalistic excellence and achievement in Kenya.
