On August 12, 2020, the Graduate School of Media and Communications at Aga Khan University (GSMC) held its first-ever virtual open day to give potential applicants a glimpse into its Masters programmes.
GSMC Dean Prof Lawrence Pintak acknowledged the current challenges affecting the media industry such as shrinking revenues, changing consumer needs and digitization. However despite the challenges, there is an emergence of opportunities. “Journalism education is changing but much of it is still trapped in the academic mindset of theoretical approaches to issues. Our curriculum is practical and it will give you the right skills and mindset to approach journalism in a new way,” he said.
The hour-long event drew in media and communication professionals from East Africa and featured GSMC staff, current students and alumni to share their experiences of the Masters in Digital Journalism programme.
Julian Kamau, Social Media Editor at Standard Group and an alumna of the programme said, “I would encourage anyone wishing to grow their skills to becoming an all-round journalist to join the programme as the lessons are practical. You will also benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience from the faculty and guest lecturers.”
The Masters in Digital Journalism is a full-time, two-year graduate programme that combines real-life practice with academic rigor to position early and mid-career journalists as leaders in their field. The programme enables journalists to develop knowledge, skills and professional qualities for success at the highest levels of their profession and gives them an opportunity to work with world-renowned journalists and scholars as they blend practice, critical thinking and theory in their course work.
Applications are open until September 1, 2020. To apply, go to https://www.aku.edu/admissions/ma-digital-journalism/Pages/home.aspx
