The KITAB project has released a new blog; Algorithmic Reading of Shiʿi Hadith Collections: Direct Borrowing and Common Sources by Aslisho Qurboniev. The blog discusses what Shiʿi hadith is and provides some preliminary ideas towards reconstructing early hadith transmission through computational reading.
Aslisho concludes “These new computational tools can not only help rethink the standard questions about knowledge transmission but also explore the complex ways in which cultural memory was formed, transmitted and perpetuated. ‘Digital humanities,’ while itself a recent and likely a temporary shorthand to refer to a set of digital methods and toolboxes, may help us challenge an array of neologisms and modern constructions in the field of Islamic studies, and return us to closer access to source-texts, thus allowing the texts to speak for themselves. Ultimately and ironically, these methods will help us recognise the merits of the so-called ‘traditional Muslim sources’ by reconstructing the history of knowledge production and transmission as it unfolded organically.”
