In the first week of September 2019, Aga Khan University's Department of Family Medicine launched their first online AACME accredited course "FamMed Essentials" with a total of 21 participants from across Pakistan and abroad.
FamMed Essentials was born out of the Department of Family Medicine's desire to create an accessible learning resource for medical practitioners and educators who have already completed various forms of medical education. General medical practitioners often work long hours with busy schedules while being pillars in the communities they serve. Providing these individuals with a course to help further strengthen an understanding of family medicine, brush up on previously explored skills, or prepare for postgraduate examinations was imperative.
FamMed Essentials is a 5-moule course that covers the breadth of Family Medicine within ten months. It includes several synchronous online learning sessions, along with asynchronous learning via Moodle, for a collaborative digital learning experience.
The course was designed in collaboration with the Network of Blended and Digital Learning (BDL_Net), Audio Visual (AV), Library and Academic Computing (AC) at AKU. The BDL_Net was an integral part in helping solidify pedagogical practices, innovative technology integration, and organizing course material. Up until the very day of the launch, BDL_Net and Family Medicine worked side by side to create a course that is both engaging and thought-provoking.
