“Why did I become a nurse?” says Dilshad Begum, MScN ’16. “Because it’s a privilege to care for patients and their families. Throughout my career, I’ve worked in a variety of roles and the sense of fulfillment I get when a patient feels hopeful about their health is so worthwhile.”
Dilshad made rapid progress in her career after completing her Post-RN BScN from the School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2007. Within a year of graduating, she was promoted to assistant head nurse in the cardiac care unit at the University Hospital where she was responsible for a busy ward of 35 patients at any given stretch.
The time she spent helping patients and their families make informed healthcare decisions was deeply rewarding and made her question how she could have an even bigger impact. With this vision, she joined the clinical trials unit at AKU and took on the role of a clinical research nurse where she’d be able to generate new knowledge that would lead to even better treatment and care for patients.
While working, she embarked on her master’s degree where her focus remained on understanding the perceptions of research participants about informed consent processes and their experiences of clinical research.
“Patients and their families always remember the nurse. Patient advocacy is core to what I do and it’s something I love doing.”
Dilshad will be engaged in a number of trials on new medications and behavioral interventional studies for the next few months. She is also currently facilitating students writing their master’s theses at SONAM and intends to teach graduate students in the coming year.
