Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is rampant in Pakistan, a disease that presents itself at birth. Pakistan, China, Indonesia and India are four countries that account for half the children born with heart defects worldwide.
This disease affects the structure of the heart, causing oxygen-poor blood to flow out of the heart and to the rest of the body. CHD is one of the most common development defects, occurring in one per cent of the population worldwide, that is, five out of every 10,000 babies. Specifically, in Pakistan, due to a majority of the births taking place in rural communities, the total number of babies born with the defect is hard to accurately estimate. However, it has been determined that approximately, more than 60,000 infants are born with a hole in their heart each year. Furthermore, about half of these patients require surgeries to survive their first year.
In keeping with our mission, the Aga Khan University hosted its annual Mending Kids’ Hearts charity golf tournament at the Defence Raya Golf & Country Club in Lahore on March 3, 2019. A total of 19 teams participated, comprising a total of 75 people, resulting in 10 million rupees being raised for CHD.
With the funds raised every year through this tournament and the enthusiastic participation of all our players and sponsors, AKUH has managed to conduct over 690 procedures for CHD in 2018, a substantial increase from the 460 procedures conducted two years ago. Our goal is to strive to conduct 1,000 procedures annually by 2020. This disease is still on the rise in Pakistan and we continue be the premier hospital for CHD and treat all income level patients from across Pakistan.
Every single person at the event was very enthusiastic about not only being able to play the sport they love, but to play it while supporting such a worthy cause.
Moreover, the participants were really excited at the fact that they knew their contribution would go a long way in helping an organisation that helps children. Participants were also eager to return next year to the tournament as they stated it was their favorite charity tournament of the year.
The winners were the GNC Mega Men team comprising Imran Mukhtar, Taimur Shabbir, Zunair Alem Khan, and Waleed Zubair, as well as the ARCO Brave Hearts 1 team comprising Ahmed Rafi, Ahsan Khawaja, Abbas Shah, and Umer Chudhry. The event was a resounding success and with the money raised, AKUH will continue to provide top notch healthcare to deserving families, and give these kids a chance at a healthy future by mending their hearts.
