Kua is one of the largest medieval Swahili sites in East Africa and Stéphane Pradines, Associate Professor, has received an AKU grant to lay the ground work for an archaeological project on Mafia Island and Kua.
Mafia Island is located at the mouth of the Rufiji River in Tanzania and Kua is on the small island of Juani, to the south-west of Mafia.
The grant will allow a field school in archaeology and conservation to take place, giving young East African students the chance to train in the specific discipline of Islamic archaeology. ISMC will work in partnership with the Tanzanian Antiquities and World Monument Fund on the project.
The long term goal is to promote Kua as a destination and help it to benefit from carefully managed tourism as people will travel to visit the heritage site. This could create employment and economic opportunities for one of Tanzania’s poorest areas, as well as give this historic site the recognition it deserves.
