Langua​ge Accuracy in Writing (Online) - B2​​​

This course focuses on developing accuracy in academic writing. You will be exposed to and have the opportunity to practise elements of language that are essential for writing clear and accurate academic texts.

The course will cover writing accurate sentences and paragraphs, using academic vocabulary and grammar precisely and appropriately. You will also focus on developing correct use of punctuation, identifying and correcting common mistakes, and learning proofreading strategies to make sure your writing is accurate.

This course is ideal for AKU students who want to improve their academic writing skills and need to focus on accuracy. It is aimed at students who have B2​ level of English.

This is a 6 weeks online course, and you will be expected to dedicate at least 3 hours of study per week.

Introdu​ction to Academic Reading (Online) - B1/B2​​

This course focuses on developing academic reading skills. You will be familiarized with the basic concepts of surface reading and deep reading. Your course tutor will guide you through the reading process, speed reading, and the text structure of common academic genres (namely textbooks and research articles).

This course is ideally suited for students at AKU who need support in developing their academic reading skills. It is aimed at students who have B1/B2 level of English.

You will be expected to commit to three hours’ study a week for three weeks. You will be able to complete the course content in your own time.

Introduction to Academic Writing (Online) - B1/B2​

This course will provide you with a brief introduction to academic writing, enabling you to gain an awareness and understanding of some key features of this kind of writing.

We will introduce the main features of academic writing; content, organisation, and language. You will develop some proficiency in a few key areas of ‘academic’ grammar, learn about the stages in academic writing, and produce a piece of writing of your own. 

Your course tutor will provide feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your writing and individual guidance on how you can improve further.

This course is ideal for 1st year undergraduate students at AKU who need support in developing their academic writing skills. It is aimed at students who have B1/B2​ level of English.

Integrating Academic Reading Into Writing (Online) - B2​

This Integrating Academic Reading into Writing course builds on the ELE_net Introduction to Academic Writing course. It is suitable for students who have completed this course and feel they need more support with academic reading and writing. The course is aimed at students with a B2​level in writing, and the main aim is to provide the language skills required to effectively read and integrate academic source materials into writing.

The course will focus on some of the key skills and language features that are essential in academic reading and writing. These include using sources, note-taking, paraphrasing, summarising, avoiding plagiarism, references, quotations, citations, and incorporating data. 

You will be expected to complete all the activities on the course and keep up with the weekly schedule. You will need to commit 18 hours to complete the course.

This course will focus on developing your speaking skills in using English for Academic Purposes. The main aim of the course is to provide you with the language and skills needed to participate with greater confidence in academic classes and discussions. 

The course content will focus on the language used in giving presentations and taking parts in discussions on academic topics. 

Your course tutor will provide feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your English and individual guidance on how you can improve further.

This course is aimed at students who have B1 level of English on the CEFR. The B1 level represents an  intermediate standard of language proficiency. 

You will be expected to commit to studying four hours (2 hours face-to-face and 2 hours online learning) a week for eight weeks.​

IELTS Preparation (Online) - B1/C1​

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely recognised language proficiency test. IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale to indicate your level of English proficiency. IELTS Preparation will prepare you to take the IELTS test for the first time, or improve your score if you have taken it previously. 

This online course shows you what you need to do to be successful in the IELTS test and how you are assessed by the examiners. Each week of the course focuses on a different part of the test - speaking, writing, reading and listening. 

You will also receive individual feedback from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will indicate your current level and provide recommendations for improvement.

IELTS Preparation is aimed at participants with at least a B1 level.

You will be expected to commit to three hours a week (online) for six weeks. You will be able to complete the course in your own time.
