The courses offered below are available for staff who wish to develop the language skills to work ​more effectively in English​ at AKU​. The availability of places is limited, so it is important to book your seat as soon as possible.

The course fee can be paid through your department (with your department’s agreement) or by salary deduction, payable in your local currency. If paying through your department you will need a budget code in order to complete the booking.​

General English (Online) - A1–B2

General English is an online self-study course which aims to develop your language skills at a particular level.

The course is made up of twelve modules, each focusing on a different theme (e.g. family, travel, jobs and culture). These themes are explored through a variety of online activities using a range of media (reading texts, audio, quizzes etc).

This is a 72 hour course to be completed over 24 weeks. You will be expected to complete one module (6 hours of study) every two weeks.

This course is aimed at learners who want to improve in all areas of English language for everyday purposes and enjoy independent self-study.  

We offer this course at a range of levels from A1 to B2 in the CEFR. You will be enrolled on a British Council LearnEnglish Pathways course which is appropriate for your level.

General English - B1/B2

The General English courses aim to improve your overall English skills. There are face to face classes at two different levels (B1 or B2) supported with online content.

The course is made up of twelve modules, each focusing on a different theme (e.g. family, travel, jobs and culture). This is a 72-hour course to be completed over 16 weeks with a two hours’ face to face class every week. 

These course are aimed at learners who want to improve in all areas of English language for everyday purposes and enjoy self-study combined with face to face teaching.  The B1 and B2 levels relate to the CEFR.

IELTS Preparation (Online) - B1–C1

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely recognised language proficiency test for employment, education and visa purposes. The IELTS Preparation will help prepare you for both the Academic or General test and achieve your IELTS goals. 

This online course explains what you need to do to be successful in each part of the IELTS test and how you are assessed by the examiners. Each week of the course focuses on a different part of the test - speaking, writing, reading and listening. 

You will receive individual feedback on your test practice from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will estimate your current IELTS level and provide recommendations for improvement. 

IELTS Preparation is aimed at AKU staff members with a B1 level​ or above. You will be expected to commit to three hours a week for five weeks.

​​IELTS Advanced Writing (Online) - B2​–C1

This course is designed for staff members with a B2 - C1​ ​level of English students who are aiming for an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher and need further support with the writing part of the test.

Each week of the course focuses on a different type of question you may face in the IELTS Academic or General Training writing tests.​​​​​​​

You will look in detail at sample papers so you can see what is required to achieve a high 6.5-8.0 band score and receive guidance on how to write your answer.

You will also receive individual feedback on your writing from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will indicate your current level and provide recommendations for improvement.   

IELTS Preparation is aimed at AKU staff members with a B2-C1 level​. You will be expected to commit to studying three hours a week for six weeks.

This course focuses on enabling participants to write effective emails. This course is aimed at staff members who have B1 level of English on the CEFR.

You will be familiarized with the basic format of emails, how you can write  appropriately and the vocabulary used in work-based communication.

This will be an intensive course over the weekend where your tutor will give you tasks, constructive feedback and answer queries related to email writing.

You will be expected to commit to eighteen study hours in total over two days.​

Speaking - B1

This course focuses on developing speaking skills. It will provide you with an opportunity to improve speaking in a variety of everyday and work-based situations.

You will be familiarized with the basic concepts of communication, fluency, grammar and vocabulary for the spoken mode. You will develop these concepts through practice activities interacting with each other and with an audience.

Your course tutor will guide you through useful material to enhance speaking and give constructive feedback on the given tasks.

This course is ideal for people who deal with the public in English. It is aimed at students who have B1 level of English on the CEFR.

You will be expected to commit to four study hours a week for ten weeks.​

English for Work (Online) - B1

This course focuses on developing your skills to cope better with using English for Occupational Purposes. The main aim of the course is to provide you with a language-rich environment in order to develop your skills in English for work-related situations.

The course content focuses on developing the communication skills needed by involving you in work-related situations.

Your course tutor will provide feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your English and give individual guidance on how you can improve further.

This course is aimed at AKU staff members who have B1 level of English on the CEFR. The B1 level represents an intermediate standard of language proficiency.

This is a self-study course and you will be enrolled on the British Council LearnEnglish Select course. You ​will be expected to commit to four hours of online learning weekly for sixteen weeks.

This online course focuses on writing meeting minutes.The main aim of the course is to provide you with a language-rich environment in order to develop your skills in taking meeting notes and writing minutes in an appropriate, consistent and effective way.

The course content focuses on taking meeting notes and transferring the information into meeting minutes highlighting relevant discussions, decisions and actions agreed.
