The courses offered below are available for staff who wish to develop the language skills to work more effectively in English at AKU. The availability of places is limited, so it is important to book your seat as soon as possible.

The course fee can be paid through your department (with your department’s agreement) or by salary deduction, payable in your local currency. If paying through your department you will need a budget code in order to complete the booking.

​​​​English for Emails (Online) - B1

This course focuses on enabling participants to write effective emails. It is geared towards professionals with a B1 (i.e. intermediate) level of English.

You will be familiarized with the basic format of emails, how you can write  appropriately and the vocabulary used in work-based communication.​​

This will be an online course where your tutor will give you tasks, constructive feedback and answer queries related to email writing.

You will be expected to commit to eighteen study hours in total over six weeks.

This is a course to help you write effective business emails in English at B2 level. This course will provide tips on writing more professional emails as well as equip you with the necessary English writing skills to write effective emails at a B2 level.

You will improve your grammar and vocabulary skills for email writing and also improve your cross-cultural knowledge to make you more effective and successful in your business communication. You will look at different email formats to analyze tone, formality levels, and various organizational styles. 

This will be an online course where your tutor will give you tasks, constructive feedback and answer queries related to email writing.

English for Meetings - C1​​​

This course is aimed at AKU staff who need to use a high level of English to participate effectively in meetings, especially in meetings with senior AKU management. It is a face-to-face course with an online component. 

The aim of the course is to develop the language and skills needed to participate in meetings at a C1​ level in the CEFR. This means, for example, being able to follow complex discussions, make meaningful contributions to these discussions, and use meeting management skills ensure productive outcomes.

To ensure you are actively engaged in the learning process, a task-based approach is used. The tasks will involve you in preparing for meetings, participating in meetings, and reflecting on their performance in meetings. A variety of work-related scenarios are covered, including informal and formal meetings.

The course runs for e​​ight weeks.There is a two-hour class each week and at least one hour’s online study each week related to these classes.

Business English - B1​​​​​​

This course focuses on developing your skills to cope better in using English at w​ork. The main aim of the course is to provide you with a language-rich environment in order to develop your skills in English for work-related situations.

The course content focuses on developing the communication skills needed through involving you in using English for work-related situations.

Your course tutor will provide feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your English and give individual guida​​nce on how you can improve further.

This course is aimed at staff members who have B1 level of English on the CEFR. The B1 level represents an intermediate standard of language proficiency.

Business English - B​​2​

This course focuses on developing your skills to cope better in using English at work. The main aim of the course is to prepare you to present your department to new clients and develop important English communication and team-working skil​​ls.

The course content focuses on developing the communication skills needed to meet clients, write business proposals and make recommendations, present product concepts and project plan, organise staff training and discuss costs and budgets. 

Your course tutor will provide feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your English and give individual guidance on how you can improve further.

This course is aimed at staff members who have B2​​ level of English on the CEFR. The B2 level represents an upper-intermediate standard of language proficiency. 

You will be expected to commit to a two hours face-to-face class and two hours online learning for twelve weeks.​

English for Writing Meeting Minutes (Online) - B2

This course focuses on writing meeting minutes. The main aim of the course is to provide you with a language-rich environment in order to develop your skills in taking meeting notes and writing minutes​​ in an appropriate, consiste nt and effective way.

The course content focuses on taking meeting notes and transferring the information into meeting minutes, while highlighting relevant discussions, decisions and actions agreed.

​General English - B1​​/B2​

The General English courses aim to improve your overall English skills. There are face-to-face classes at two different levels (B1 or B2) supported with online content.

The courses are made up of 12 modules, each focusing on a different theme (e.g. family, travel, jobs and culture). These themes are explored through a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities in class and will be supported by online activities using a range of media (reading texts, audio, quizzes etc.). 

This is a 54 hour course to be completed over 12 weeks with two hours face-to-face class every week. 

These course are aimed at learners who want to improve in all areas of English language for everyday purposes and enjoy self-study combined with face to face teaching. The B1 and B2 levels relate to the CEFR​

I​ELTS Advanced Speaking (Online) - B2/C1

This online course is designed for AKU staff members with a B2/C1 level of English who are aiming for an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher and need further support with the Speaking part of the test. 

IELTS Advanced Speaking focuses on helping you to develop the skills and language needed to achieve your IELTS goals. Each week you will have opportunities to practise and develop your speaking skills. You will receive feedback in group and one-to-one sessions. At the end of course, your tutor will indicate your strengths and weaknesses, your current level and provide recommendations for further improvement.

You will be expected to commit to three hours a week for six weeks. You will be able to complete the course in your own time. The course can be completed on any internet-enabled device, including smartphones and tablets.

IELTS Advanced Writing (Online) - B2 /C1

This course is designed for staff members with a B2/C1 level of English students who are aiming for an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher and need further support with the writing part of the test.

Each week of the course focuses on a different type of question you may face in the IELTS Academic or General Training writing tests.

You will look in detail at sample papers so you can see what is required to achieve a high 6.5-8.0 band score and receive guidance on how to write your answer.

You will also receive individual feedback on your writing from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will indicate your current level and provide recommendations for improvement.

You will be expected to commit to three hours a week for six weeks. You will be able to complete the course in your own time. The course can be completed on any internet-enabled device, including smartphones and tablets.

IELTS Preparation (Online) - B1/C1

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely recognised language proficiency test. IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale to indicate your level of English proficiency. IELTS Preparation will prepare you to take the IELTS test for the first time, or improve your score if you have taken it previously. 

This online course shows you what you need to do to be successful in the IELTS test and how you are assessed by the examiners. Each week of the course focuses on a different part of the test - speaking, writing, reading and listening. 

You will also receive individual feedback from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will indicate your current level and provide recommendations for improvement.

IELTS Preparation is aimed at participants with at least a B1 level.
