The courses offer​​ed below are available for staff who wish to develop the language skills to work ​more effectively in English​ at AKU​. The availability of places is limited, so it is important to book your seat as soon as possible.

The course fee can be paid through your department (with your department’s agreement) or by salary deduction, payable in your local currency. If paying through your department you will need a budget code in order to complete the booking.​

General English (Online) - A1/B2​

General English is an online self-study course which aims to develop your language skills through a variety of interactive online lessons.

The course is made up of twelve modules, each focusing on a different theme (e.g. family, travel, jobs and culture), which is explored through audio recordings, text and images.

This is a 72 hour course to be completed over 24 weeks. You will be expected to complete one module (6 hours of study) every two weeks. 

This course is aimed at staff who want to improve in all areas of English language for everyday purposes and enjoy independent self-study.  We offer this course at a range of levels from A1 to B2​ in the CEFR.

General English - B1/B2​

The General English courses aim to improve your overall English skills. There are face-to-face classes at two different levels (B1 or B2) supported with online content.

The courses are made up of 12 modules, each focusing on a different theme (e.g. family, travel, jobs and ​​culture). These themes are explored through a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities in class and will be supported by online activities using a range of media (reading texts, audio, quizzes etc.). 

This is a 72 hour course to be completed over 16 weeks with two hours face-to-face class every week. 

These course are aimed at learners who want to improve in all areas of English language for everyday purposes and enjoy self-study combined with face to face teaching. The B1 and B2 levels relate to the CEFR. For more information about the CEFR levels, go to CEFR.​

​I​ELTS Preparation (Online) - B1/C1​

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely recognised language proficiency test. IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale to indicate your level of English proficiency. IELTS Preparation will prepare you to take the IELTS test for the first time, or improve your score if you have taken it previously. 

This online course shows you what you need to ​do to be successful in the IELTS test and how you are assessed by the examiners. Each week of the course focuses on a different part of the test - speaking, writing, reading and listening. 

You will also receive individual feedback from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will indicate your current level and provide recommendations for improvement.

IELTS Preparation is aimed at participants with at least a B1 level.

You will be expected to commit to three hours a week (online) for six weeks. You will be able to complete the course in your own time.

​​IELTS Advanced Writing (Online) - B2​/C1​

This course is designed for staff members with a B2/C1 level of English students who are aiming for an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher and need further support with the writing part of the test.

Each week of the course focuses on a different type of question you may face in the IELTS Academic or General Training writing tests.

You will look in detail at sample papers so you can see what is required to achieve a high 6.5-8.0 band score and receive guidance on how to write your answer.

You will also receive individual feedback on your writing from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will indicate your current level and provide recommendations for improvement.

You will be expected to commit to three hours a week for six weeks. You will be able to complete the course in your own time. The course can be completed on any internet-enabled device, including smartphones and tablets.

Each week you will have opportunities to practise and develop your speaking skills. You will receive feedback in group and one-to-one sessions. Writing (Online) - B1​

​This online course focuses on developing your writing skills. You will learn to write correctly, clearly and concisely, making your writing better understood by your readers. You will learn practical skills to improve all aspects of your writing, such as developing ideas, accurate sentence construction and paragraphing. 

Your course tutor will provide feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your writing and give individual feedback on weekly written tasks.

If you struggle to write clearly and concisely or make frequent grammar mistakes, then this eight week writing course will help increase your skills and boost your confidence.

It is aimed at staff who have a B1 level of English. 

You will be expected to commit to three study hours a week (online) for eight weeks.

This is a course to help you write effective business emails in English at B2 level. This course will provide tips on writing more professional emails as well as equip you with the necessary English writing skills to write effective emails at a B2 level.

You will improve your grammar and vocabulary skills for email writing and also improve your cross-cultural knowledge to make you more effective and successful in your business communication. You will look at different email formats to analyze tone, formality levels, and various organizational styles.

This is a self-study course and you will be enrolled on the British Council LearnEnglish Select course. You will be expected to commit to 4 hours of online learning weekly for sixteen weeks.

This course focuses on developing your skills to cope better in using English at work. The main aim of the course is to provide you with a language-rich environment in order to develop your skills in English for work-related situations.

The course content focuses on developing the communication skills needed through involving you in using English for work-related situations.

Your course tutor will provide feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your English and give individual guidance on how you can improve further.

This course is aimed at staff members who have B1​ level of English on the CEFR. The B1 level represents an intermediate standard of language proficiency.
