Dr Azhar R.​ Hussain

Director Laboratories and Core Facilities

Dr Azhar Hussain is the Director of Laboratories and Core facilities at the CRM. He is responsible for the organization and oversight of the facilities and providing guidance and support to researchers and students. 

Dr Hussain received his MBBS degree in 1992, after which he progressed to join the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, USA as a visiting fellow in the Department of Paediatric Oncology. His research there was focused towards identifying certain apoptotic irregularities in Burkitt's Lymphoma cell lines which hold clinical implications in terms of risk stratification and treatment modality of the disease. 

Dr Hussain has international research and facilities management experience which he acquired in the USA and Saudi Arabia. He was instrumental in establishing the Molecular Biology Laboratory for Paediatric Cancer at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. At the King Faisal Research Centre, his research focus was on the identification of dysregulated survival pathways in lymphoma and leukemia. He expanded his studies to include other cancers such as breast, ovary, colorectal and thyroid cancer. 

The results of Dr Hussain's studies have contributed towards the identification of prognostic markers as well as potential therapeutic targets for treatment of thyroid and breast cancers originating from the Middle Eastern population. 

Dr Hussain has published over 55 peer-reviewed research articles in journals of international repute.

Research interest 

Dr Hussain as part of Professor El-Nasir Lalani's team at CRM is conducting research in understanding the role of cancer stem cells in recurrence of metastatic cancers.
