Over one hundred students studying in Pakistan, Tanzania and Kenya have participated in the Introduction to Academic Writing course offered by ELE_net in 2017. The aim of this course is to enable first year students at AKU, or students who lack confidence in their writing skills, to gain an awareness and understanding of some of the key features of academic writing. Academic writing at university is very different from other types of English writing students may have done in the past.
In this introductory course, participants are introduced to the main features of academic writing using interactive, self-study learning material and develop proficiency in a few key areas of academic grammar. The course facilitator provides online support and expert feedback on the weekly writing tasks. In order to receive an ELE_net Certificate of Completion, course participants must complete at least 80% of the online activities and all the writing tasks.
Feedback from the two groups who have completed Introduction to Academic Writing has been very positive and shows that 85% of respondents ‘agreeing’ or ‘strongly agreeing’ that their “academic writing skills have improved as a result of this course”.
This course is offered around four times a year. ELE_net is also offering advanced academic writing courses : Integrating Reading into Academic Writing’ and ‘Language Accuracy in Writing.. These aim to build on some of the skills developed here and provide course participants with writing skills needed in order to succeed in their academic studies at AKU.
Further details of all these courses are available on the ELE_net Student courses page.
