Faculty of Arts and Sciences: Report of Committee on Alternate Sources of Energy
Aga Khan University (AKU) is planning a new campus on the outskirts of Karachi, Pakistan, for its proposed Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), scheduled to start operations in 2007. The 1100-acres campus lies in a semi-rural setting and provides an exciting opportunity for forward looking and innovative development that could serve as a role model for modern campuses in the region. Although the energy requirements of the FAS can be met by conventional means based on fossil fuels, their high cost in a developing country context is an inhibitor. Sole reliance on conventional energy solutions may make campus operations unsustainably expensive. Another important consideration was the need to reduce campus emissions of greenhouse gases and other atmospheric pollutants. Hence a Committee on Alternative Sources of Energy was appointed by the University to consider and recommend for further detailed analysis alternative energy technologies suitable for the new campus. 'Planning for Physical Facilities - Report of the Committee on Alternative Sources of Energy', details the Committee's deliberations.
AKU welcomes any comments on the Committee's report and recommendations, as well as opinions on the feasibility of its proposals. The University would also be most interested in any details of similar such projects undertaken and their outcomes. Comments or queries can be emailed to fas.ae@aku.edu.
