University Exhibition
Universities as Catalysts
to Development and Progress
At a time when higher education
worldwide, is facing enormous challenges from forces of globalisation, the University
Exhibition in Kenya provided a much needed platform for discussion for academics
and students. The fourth Kenya University Exhibition was held at the Kenyatta
International Conference Centre in March 2006.
The Assistant Minister
for Education, Mrs Beth Mugo opened the four-day event. It brought together
15 public and private universities, one constituent college, the Commission
for Higher Education (CHE), the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) and the Higher
Education Loans Board (HELB). The theme this year was ‘The University as a Catalyst
for Development.’
The participants at the
exhibition exchanged views on the way forward for the role of universities as
catalysts of development and progress and the need to foster synergy between
universities and the industry. Visitors expressed admiration for AKU's programmes
being offered in the East African region. The exhibition was officially closed
by Professor Karega Mutahi, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Education,
who encouraged AKU to "keep up with our specialisation" in the area
of health sciences in East Africa.
AKU's participation in
the exhibition was an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the University’s
presence and programmes in East Africa, its contributions and future plans in
its role as a catalyst of progress and development in the region.
