COVER STORY AKU Convocation Graduates 275 Doctors, Nurses and Teachers PM Shaukat Aziz Announces Allotment of 500 Acres of Land for Purchase by AKU for its Faculty of Arts and Sciences His Highness the Aga Khan, Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and Chancellor of Aga Khan University (AKU), presided over AKU's 18th Convocation ceremony on December 3, 2005. Full Story AKU Symposium Discusses Advancements in Health Sciences Education AKU's 10th National Health Sciences Symposium was held from September 19 to 21, 2005 at the Stadium Road campus. This year's theme was 'Health Sciences Education - Trends, Opportunities and Challenges'. Full Story AKU Graduates its First PhD in Health Sciences Dr Anila Yasmeen has become the first PhD scholar of AKU's PhD programme in Health Sciences. She received her PhD from His Highness the Aga Khan at the Convocation 2005. Full Story AKU-FAS Seminar 'New Directions for Libraries in the Internet Age' The planned Aga Khan University Faculty of Arts and Sciences (AKU-FAS) held its first academic seminar on November 10 and 11, 2005. The theme of the seminar was 'More than Books: New Directions for Academic Libraries' and Ms Lorin Ritchie, University Librarian of the American University of Sharjah, UAE was the guest speaker. Full Story East Africa Graduation Ceremonies The AKU East Africa graduation ceremonies, were held in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya in the third week of December 2005. This was the first time that an AKU graduation ceremony was held in all three of the East African countries where the University has a presence. Full Story Special Lecture Series Fine Arts and Humanities Nourish Intuition and Nurture the Human Spirit: Dr Carl Amrhein Dr Carl Amrhein, Provost and Vice President Academics, University of Alberta, Canada, was the speaker at AKU's Special Lecture Series programme in November 2005. He presented an eloquent discourse titled 'Thinking Globally, Developing Locally: General Education in Society through the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.' The theme was 'Critical Care Issues and Management: A Requisite for the New Millennium in the Developing World.' Full Story International Seminar on Indoor Air Pollution from Household Fuels Smoke from Wood and Animal Dung Causes Nearly 25,000 Infant Deaths Every Year in Pakistan AKU and World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva, held an international seminar titled 'Indoor Air Pollution from Household Fuels' in September. It highlighted the harmful effects on poor mothers and children from smoke generated by biomass fuels. The course is scheduled to begin in September 2006. The Chairman of AKU's Board of Trustees, Ambassador Saidullah Khan Dehlavi, and Members including Princess Zahra Aga Khan, AKU President Shamsh Kassim-Lakha and Dr Fraser Mustard.
