Dr Thomas Christie, Director; and Saqib Farooq, Assistant Manager, Exam Production and Security; AKU-EB, participated in the 31st International Association for Educational Assessment (IAEA) international conference titled ‘Assessment and the future schooling and learning’, held in Abuja, Nigeria from September 4 to 9, 2005. Dr Christie presented a paper on ‘Rote Memorisation as a Sufficient Explanation of Secondary School Examination Achievement in Pakistan: An Empirical Investigation of a Widespread Assumption’.
   
Dr John Retalic, Associate Professor, AKU-IED, presented a paper on ‘School Improvement through Organizational Learning: An Impact Study’ at the School Effectiveness and Improvement Conference organised by the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement in Shenyang, China from September 23 to 25, 2005.
   

Dr Anjum Halai, Assistant Professor, AKU-IED, presented a paper on ‘Evaluating the Impact of Continuous Improvement in Schools’ at a conference titled ‘Crossing Borders, Crossing Boundaries, 2005’ organised by the Joint Canadian Evaluation Crossing (CEA) and the American Evaluation Association (AEA), held in Ontario, Canada from October 24 to 30, 2005.

   
Dr Bernadette Dean, Associate Professor, AKU-IED, presented a paper on ‘Developing a Citizenship Education Programme for Pakistan: Drawing on Progressive Interpretations of Concepts in the Islamic Tradition’ at a conference on ‘Democratic Practices as Learning Opportunities’ held in New York, USA from November 4 to 5, 2005.
   
Dr Irma Gavino, Associate Professor, AKU-SON, presented two papers titled ‘Development of Models for Collaborative Partnership Between Nursing Service and Education’ and ‘Living Through Gynaecological Cancer: Stories of Patients in a Private Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan’; and Jacqueline Dias (RN,’85) Assistant Professor and Director, Diploma Programme AKU-SON, presented a paper on ‘Setting Standards for Nursing Education through Programme Evaluation: An Exemplar from the Aga Khan University School of Nursing, Pakistan’ at ‘Third Pan Pacific Nursing Conference’ in Hong Kong from November 10 to 14, 2005.
