Levi Nelson Hilling
Appointed Vice President of Health Services

In May 2005, the University appointed Levi Nelson Hilling as Vice President, Health Services, AKU. Mr. Hilling is well known to many at AKU, having previously worked at the University from 1992 to 1997 as Director General and CEO, AKUH and Director of University Administration.

He has subsequently been associated in various capacities with Aga Khan Development Network, including Director of Hospital Systems in the Social Welfare Department at Aiglemont and, most recently as Consultant and Member- Secretary of the Task Force responsible for coordinating the integration of Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi with AKU.

As Vice President, Health Services, Mr. Hilling will be the overall head of all health services activities at AKU, providing leadership and direction in the development of a vision and in strategic planning for the various health service units. Initially, his primary effort will be focused on developing a comprehensive plan and strategies to ensure a smooth transition between AKUH, Nairobi and AKU, and to manage all aspects related to this major change.

Mr. Hilling holds an MS in Hospital and Health Services Administration from Ohio State University and has been associated with health care administration and teaching for the last 40 years. During this period, he has held senior leadership positions with large teaching hospitals, including Baystate Medical Centre in Massachusetts and Vanderbilt University Hospital in Tennessee. He also recently served as a Trustee of the Board of Directors of Erlanger Health Systems, a multi-hospital system in south-eastern Tennessee, associated with the University of Tennessee.
