President of Bowdoin College in the USA from 1990 until 2001, he is a graduate of Princeton, read law at Cambridge University and received an LLB from Harvard. In 1968, he was the Ford Foundation's representative in Pakistan and subsequently became head of the Foundation's Middle East and Africa Office. Appointed President of Carleton College in 1977, he also served as Director of an insurance company, a bank, a museum and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Carleton College in 1986. That same year, Mr Edwards joined the Secretariat of His Highness the Aga Khan as Head of the Department of Health, Education and Housing. He also served as a Trustee of the Aga Khan University (AKU), from 1987 to 1990. He was again appointed on the AKU Board of Trustees in November 1999.
