Dr Haile T. Debas

An MD from McGill University, Dr Debas is the Executive Director of the Global Health Sciences at the University of California at San Francisco. His career as a physician, researcher, teacher and academic administrator spans approximately four decades and includes positions at hospitals, medical centers and universities in Canada and the United States.

Dr Debas is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Additionally, he is a member of the United Nations Commission for HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Society for Digestive Surgery, the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Board of Surgery and the American Medical Association.

Dr Debas has received honorary degrees from McGill University, Imperial College, Oregon Health Sciences University and the University of British Columbia. He has also received the Abraham Flexner Award from the American Association of Medical Colleges, a fellowship at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Study and Conference Center, and the Diversity Promotion Award from the University of California, San Francisco Council of Minority Organizations. He was appointed to the Aga Khan University Board of Trustees in January 2010.
