Bioethics Group
An important milestone in the development of bioethics
at Aga Khan University (AKU) was the formation of the
Bioethics Group (BG) in 1997. This group comprises
of individual faculty members and hospital staff sharing
a common interest in bioethics and has representation
from a variety of departments including Medicine, Surgery,
Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Community Health Sciences,
Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Anaesthesia,
School of Nursing and Nursing Services. One of the
objectives of the BG is self education for capacity
building in the area of bioethics.
The BG has also come to play an increasingly prominent role in informal bioethics
education at AKU. The group conducts regular bioethics discussion sessions
like the Bioethics Grand Rounds and Question Time Ethics. It has also organised
symposia and workshops on various bioethics themes.
As similar bioethics resources are not available in the city, BG has occasionally
been asked to collaborate with other institutions to organise bioethics related
events outside AKU as well. In this manner, the BG has come to assume the role
of a major bioethics resource for other institutions also.
