The FAS design team has just completed a six-month research period as a precursor to the design process. It included travel throughout eastern Africa, a visit to numerous AKDN institutions, and a series of focus group discussions with faculty, staff, and students at a number of existing Universities in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
After presenting their research to the University's Board of Trustees, Beyer Blinder Belle is launching a land use study and Legorreta + Legorreta and Weiss/Manfredi are beginning to define a potential architectural vocabulary for the future campus.
Design Team Selection Process
The AKU-FAS Facilities Team initiated a two-year long search process to identify the most appropriate consultants to lead the design effort. The Facilities Team visited over twenty firms and their constructed projects in order to provide the Chancellor and an Advisory Board of higher education and design specialists sufficient material from which to make a decision.
The contenders were then narrowed to five finalists in both the architecture and planning categories. These firms presented their design ideals and past projects to the Chancellor, ultimately leading to the selection of the current design team:
