Post RN BScN Programme

With the goal of enhancing the nursing profession following the Registered Nurse (RN) programme and raising the status of women, Aga Khan University School of Nursing (AKU-SON) established Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BScN) programme, the first of its kind in Pakistan. The Post RN BScN is a two year programme, which provides experienced registered nurses prepared at the diploma level, an opportunity to acquire in depth knowledge and skills. On September 25, 1988, the BScN programme was formally inaugurated by Mir Wazir Ahmed Jogezai, then Minister of Education, Government of Pakistan.

Upon completion of the Programme, nurses are prepared to utilise effective critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to bring about changes in nursing education, management and practice in any setting.

Upon graduation, graduates will be able to demonstrate leadership, responsibility and accountability to the nursing profession by:

  • Utilising the nursing process and caring behaviors to provide safe, competent and holistic nursing to patients/clients in a variety of settings;
  • Utilising scholarly skills and scientific methods in critiquing and applying existing theories and research findings in selected practice settings;
  • Utilising effective oral and written communications in interpersonal and professional interactions with peers, patients/clients, families, and other professionals;
  • Demonstrating a high degree of competence in the use of available resources for communities, families, individuals and institutions to resolve identified needs;
  • Demonstrating the ability to coordinate activities related to the provision of health care for individuals, families and groups of patients/clients in various settings and provide leadership as appropriate;
  • Demonstrating awareness of the existing health care system and its policies as they affect the nursing profession;
  • Demonstrating attitudes and socio-political skills to influence and to facilitate individuals, families, communities, institutions and colleagues (in nursing and associated professions) to mobilise and allocate identified resources to meet health needs.
