International Collaboration
The achievements of Aga Khan University School of Nursing (AKU-SON) have been possible due to contributions from many donors and voluntary organisations namely Royal Norwegian Embassy Development Corporation (NORAD), Department for International Development (DFID), Canadian Exchange Program (CADEX) and Voluntary Service Organisations (VSO). These funds enabled AKU-SON to have expatriate faculty for teaching nursing and support courses such as English. They also supported the establishment and strengthening of the BScN Degree Programme and provision of technological support.
A major initiative to develop the capacity of AKU-SON was funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in partnership with the McMaster University in Canada. From 1983 - 2000 CIDA provided $22 million to fund BScN degrees for AKU-SON faculty and develop the Post RN BScN programme. The Development of Women Health Professionals (DWHP) programme, a bilateral programme between the government of Canada and Pakistan prepared nurses for leadership roles in government and strengthened national nursing organisations in Pakistan.
