Urology Residency Programme

The Urology Residency Programme was initiated in November 1993. This Programme is recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan , for FCPS training and also by the Royal College of Surgeons and European Board of Urology.

Objective

The goal of this comprehensive supervised training programme is to train competent Urologists in all aspects of Urology. At the end of the training, they should be able to practice Urology in a practical and cost-effective manner and be able to undergo further subspecialised training in their areas of interest.

Duration of training

The training would span a period of four years.

Eligibility

• MBBS or equivalent degree approved by PM&DC
• One year internship with six months in Medicine and allied and six months in Surgery and allied disciplines
• FCPS Part I; MRCS
• CPSP Intermediate module eligible/qualified. In exceptional cases rotations for the intermediate module can be arranged
• MRCS part 1 and 2 with at least 2 years of training in a recognized centre in surgery in general .

Scope and content

Clinical training

Clinical Education comprises supervised training in all major areas in Urology, including stone disease (with all recent modalities of treatment including ESWL percutaneous surgery and flexible ureteroscopy), Urological Oncology (radical cystectomy and orthotropic bladder and radical prostatectomy), Prostatic diseases, Reconstructive Urology, Neuro-urology, Urodynamics, Andrology and infertility. The trainee rotates with different clinical supervisors and has a rotation through Lithotripsy Suite. Extramural rotation in renal transplantation and paediatric urology and other disciplines plus elective rotations are also arranged. These rotations could even be in centers outside Pakistan .

Programmatic educational content

The resident is expected to take part in the departmental academic activities, including journal clubs, morbidity and mortality meetings and presentations. He/she is also expected to develop research skills and to participate in the ongoing research projects. Emphasis is laid on self-learning under supervision and acquisition of computer literacy, which aids in research. The resident also participates in formal and informal teaching of students, interns and junior residents. Residents are expected to not only complete their dissertations' as part of FCPS-II requirement but also engage in other funded or non funded research projects and produce at least three indexed papers during their residency.

Evaluation

In addition to the continuous informal evaluation and feedback by the supervising consultant, there are three monthly formal evaluations followed by feedback, to outline the areas of strengths and weaknesses. This forms the basis of promotion and career guidance. The European Board of Urology in-service examination is integral part of yearly external evaluation of resident's core knowledge. An OSCE examination is also arranged annually. In addition there is at least one more examination (OSCE/viva/SEQ) each year.

On-call duties

Each resident is expected to remain on-call on the hospital premises once in four nights. It is expected that residents will spend a significant time in reading and utilising library facilities and in taking responsibility for their patients.

Positions available

Two residents are taken each year in the programme.

The Urology Section comprises two Professors, three Associate Professors, one Assistant Professor, one Senior Instructor and one part-time consultant. Dr Hammad Ather, Associate Professor, is the Programme Director and Dr Khurram Siddiqui, Assistant Professor is the Programme Coordinator.
