Research

Doctors join post-graduate medical education programmes primarily to gain clinical competence for eventual independent practice. Inevitably this aspect dominates these years of training. However it must be remembered that all clinical practice has to be informed by research. Every doctor must be able to inform him/herself of research in relevant disciplines, to evaluate published research and to be able to apply it to his/her clinical practice.

Although all trainees will be educated about research methods and how to apply them the best way to become really competent in this is to do research.

Aga Khan University emphasises research in all its training programmes. All trainees have opportunities to participate in research and there are good opportunities in the University to undertake research projects.

The PGME EC provides helps in all aspects of research, also including some funding, as well and guides residents in obtaining help - financial and otherwise - from within and outside the University.

Masters in Clinical Research Programme

This is a unique project in Pakistan (indeed internationally.) Residents can apply for this two-year Master's degree in which the first year is spent in full-time study and the second year continues with on-the-job work.

The total cost of the degree is nearly Rs 700,000 which is borne entirely by the University. In addition the resident continues to be paid his/her salary.

The selection is tough as the competition for the limited places on this programme is intense. As selection into the programme affects the operation of the relevant residency programme, approval of the Chair of the resident's department is necessary for entry into it.
