Cardiac Surgery Fellowship Programme
Fellowship training in Cardiac Surgery has been reviewed and approved by the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee of Aga Khan University and commenced in November 2004. The programme is design ed to develop fully trained cardiac surgeons who would be able to complete the requirements for FCPS in cardiac surgery.
Training at AKU in this discipline offers a unique experience in adult cardiac surgery with exposure to congenital cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery. Facilities for comprehensive management of cardiac trauma exist at the University hospital.
Objective
The objective of the programme is to produce competent and skilled academic cardiac surgeons. The graduates of this programme would have acquired the training and exposure to all cardiac surgical disorders and consequently function as independent cardiac surgeons.
Duration of training
Training period is four years.
Eligibility
- MBBS degree approved by PM&DC
- FCPS Part I or equivalent examination (FCPS Part II or equivalent in general surgery is preferred)
Scope and content
Clinical training
The resident will rotate with the faculty who will train the candidate in pre-operative assessment, operative skills and post- operative management of both acute and stable cardiac patients. Rotations through Cardiology at Aga Khan University Hospital , Karachi and at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases will be provided. The selected resident will be expected to assume and provide leadership to the medical and nursing service personnel in the section of Cardiac Surgery.
Research
The section of Cardiac Surgery maintains a database of procedures performed. Ample opportunities exist to conduct clinical and basis sciences research. The resident will be expected to publish one paper during his/her training and make a presentation at a national level every year. The resident will be expected to participate in continuing medical education programmes of the University.
Evaluation
Continuous assessment and evaluation will be done by all faculty members on a daily basis. The resident will be debriefed at the end of a rotation with each faculty member.
Positions available
One resident will be recruited every year.
Administrative set-up
There are currently five full-time cardiac surgeons, two associate professors and three assistant professors. The section of Cardiac Surgery is a part of the Department of Surgery. The Programme Director is Dr Shahid Ahmed Sami.
