Postgraduate Medical Education

Message from Dean, Medical College

AKU Dean Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) is one of the key activities of Aga Khan University (AKU). This began almost as soon as the University Hospital started its work and has expanded steadily since then. Its impact has been felt nationally as its systems and processes have helped influence postgraduate medical education all over the country. Its graduates are serving the country all over Pakistan, in AKU itself and overseas as well.

Recently the University has started postgraduate medical education programmes in East Africa. The systems and processes there, are following the pattern developed and implemented here.

The hallmark of AKU's PGME programmes is the stress not only on acquisition of professional skills and knowledge but equally on the development of professionalism in its students. The programmes aim to inculcate the spirit of inquiry and research as well as the virtues of empathy, collegiality and cooperation.

Research occupies a key position in all the University's programmes. This is equally true for PGME and one major step in enhancing this was taken last year when we inaugurated the Masters in Clinical Research programme for our residents. This is a unique programme which aims to develop academic physicians of tomorrow. Details of this and other features of our programmes are to be found within this prospectus.

This prospectus sets out the philosophy and foundations and the extent of our PGME programmes and I hope it will help attract the best students to these.

Dr Mohammad Khurshid,
Dean Medical College
