AKU’s Graduation Ceremony for Postgraduate Trainees

Cohort of 114 will make valuable contribution to health care in Pakistan

Aga Khan University (AKU) held its 13th graduation ceremony of the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) trainees on October 27, 2007. The event included an academic procession, and it was the first time that graduating Interns, Residents and Fellows took part in the procession. The Chief Guest, Syed Sardar Ahmed, Senior Minister for Health, Government of Sindh, lauded the PGME programme which has introduced every year new specialties. Around 800 guests, including faculty members attended the ceremony.

Sixty-five Interns, 44 Residents, 5 Fellows and 2 students of the Epidemiology and Biostatistical programme were conferred certificates for completion of their respective training: to date, 1,491 trainees have graduated from AKU's various postgraduate training programmes, at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), as part of the University's Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) programmes. Thirty-eight per cent of AKUH's clinical faculty is comprised of its own PGME graduates. Many other graduates are practicing in their particular specialties in the Middle East, the US, UK, Europe and Australia.

Speaking on the occasion, AKU President Firoz Rasul addressed the graduates and said “do not think that you leave this university behind, and do not forget your alma mater. As you become part of the alumni, remember AKU will need your wisdom, knowledge, experience and support… I hope that you will take away this ethic of giving with you and give back both to AKU and to your own villages, cities, your country.”

Ambassador Saidullah Khan Dehlavi, Chairman Board of Trustees of AKU in his speech impressed upon the graduates the importance of their moral and ethical responsibilities, and quoted a verse from the Holy Quran: “Whoever saves a human life should be regarded as though he had saved all mankind.” Ambassador Dehlavi said that through AKU's alumni and programmes the University is “becoming truly international”, citing the PGME programme in East Africa, which established in 2004.

Postgraduate Medical Education at AKU aims to produce academic leadership for Pakistan and the region through Residency and Fellowship programmes in 44 distinct disciplines. The programmes are structured to provide rigorous training to students with increasing responsibilities under the supervision of well qualified and dedicated faculty members.  The primary mission of AKU is the development of quality resources that are trained to respond to the unique needs of the developing world.

Dr Aqueel Pabaney, graduating intern and Dr Fyezah Jehan, graduating resident, made the valedictory speeches on behalf of the graduating cohort.
