Symposium highlights universal problem of pain management.

Local and foreign experts discussed issues surrounding management of pain in a symposium organised by Aga Khan University (AKU). It was AKU's 7th Annual Pain Symposium and workshops. The theme for this year's symposium was “Global Year against Pain: Pain in Older Persons.”

The objective of this symposium was to present state-of-the-art papers and lectures on pain and its management for all those involved in this field. This covers all specialties as pain is a universal problem encountered by all those who care for patients. Invited speakers from India , Bangladesh , Switzerland and UK participated.

The symposium started with four workshops on September 6, 2007. The workshop provided hands-on experience in methodologies and techniques currently practiced to alleviate and manage pain.

The symposium highlighted many important areas of pain management. Sessions on diagnostic work up, acute pain in adults and children and controversies in regional techniques were heavily attended by national and international participants. The symposium also provided opportunities for eminent professionals and researchers in pain management to interact with experts in problem based clinical scenario sessions.

As part of its social responsibility and commitment to the advancement of health research and education, AKU regularly holds seminars, symposia and conferences to raise awareness on health related issues which are of national and international importance.
