AKU organises National Health Sciences Research Symposium

A National Health Sciences Research Symposium themed ‘Injury in the Developing World – from Prevention to Care' is being organised by Aga Khan University in Karachi (AKU). The event is scheduled for October 24 and 25, 2007 and will also feature pre- and post- symposium workshops.

The symposium would be of professional interest to practising health professionals as well as to researchers, investigators and students. Speakers have been invited from North America, Europe, India , and the Middle East along with local distinguished local speakers. The University encourages the sharing of research findings at different sessions of the Symposium, whose goals and objectives are:

  • The promotion of injury prevention and care as an integral part of local and national public health policies and programmes;
  • To share state-of-the-art research and practices in all fields of injury trauma care at national and regional level;
  • To foster partnerships between professionals working in the field of injury prevention and trauma care at local, national and regional levels;
  • To discuss ways to enhance emergency preparedness and disaster management.

  • Post-disaster response and rehabilitation

  • Role of society in injury prevention
  • Laws and regulations

Pre-symposium and post-symposium workshops will be conducted on October 22 and 23 and on October 26 and 27 respectively. The following workshops are being organised:

Decision-Making in Haemorrhage Control; Pelvic Fracture Management; Early Management of Fractures; Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Management of Abdominal Trauma; Ethical Consideration in Trauma Management; Nursing Management of Trauma Patients; Fundamentals of Tissue Engineering: Hands-on Laboratory Exercises; Obstetric and Sphincter Injury (OASI) and Repair; Child Abuse; and Domestic Violence, Trauma Surveillance, Childhood Injuries and Trauma System .

The University looks forward to this annual event and expects that its outcomes would benefit the wider community. As a part of its social responsibility and commitment to the advancement of health research and education, AKU regularly holds seminars, symposiums and events to raise awareness about health and education related issues which are of national importance and interest.
