Working Group
for Women (WGW) celebrated International Women's Day jointly with the Housekeeping
Department on March 26, 2004 at AKU auditorium. Shamim Usman, Chair WGW,
in her welcome speech outlined the vision of WGW to create a supportive environment
where men and women can work together with mutual trust and respect.
The programme "Seep
Mein Chupe Moti", highlighted the hidden talents in women, drew attention
to the problems facing women and recommended solutions.
The play "Kahani Ghar Ghar
Ki" revolved round the story of a woman who managed various household
chores, ranging from looking after the in-laws and household expenses while
her husband wastes his time in the neighbourhood.
The amateur actors, with their
moving performances, proved that talent is not the prerogative of the educated
alone. The delightful folk songs and the colourful dances were much appreciated
by the audience. The programme was wrapped up by a choir led by Naseem Khan
from the Housekeeping Department.
At the conclusion of the programme
speeches were delivered by the chief guests of the programme, Hakim Ali Khan,
Director Maintenance Department and Noorjehan Hajim Supervisor, Day Care
Centre. Hakim Ali Khan stressed the importance of the crucial role played
by women and paid tribute to her resilience and character. Noorjehan Haji
outlined the steps AKU was continuously taking to ensure that its policies
and facilities were women friendly. The performers were awarded appreciation
tokens. The programme and the spirit behind the event were well-appreciated
by those present, and several among the audience said that WGW had hosted
another successful programme to commemorate International Women's Day.
