“Pain is one of the most underestimated health care problems
in the world today, particularly in this region,” Dr Gauhar Afshan, Chair,
Organising Committee of the 11th National Health Sciences Research Symposium
held in Aga Khan University.
The theme for this year’s Symposium was “Understanding
and managing pain; multidisciplinary approach”. Speaking at the inaugural
session, Dr Gauhar Afshan emphasised the urgent need to raise the profile of
“pain management” in Pakistan. She also elaborated upon the objectives
of the yearly research symposium of Aga Khan University.
Chief Guest Mr Firoz Rasul, President, Aga Khan University welcomed
the participants and delegates of 13 different countries and appreciated the
organizing committee’s efforts for holding elaborative symposium on a
universal but neglected subject of “Pain.”
Mr. Patric McGown from UK and Professor Ramani Vijayan from
Malaysia also delivered plenary lectures in the sessions. A large number of
anaesthesiologists, oncologists, neurologists and other health care professionals
attended the two-day symposium in which many important areas of pain management
were highlighted. A total of 66 research papers were presented on various issues
of pain. The first mega event on pain management in Pakistan was very well appreciated
by all participants and attendees.
The National Health Sciences Research Symposium (NHSRS) is an
annual event by AKU on a topic relevant to Pakistan and the region. In the recent
past, symposia have focused on reproductive health, mental health and health
sciences education. The University appreciates that the endemic problems of
a region beset with financial difficulties and low development indicators can
be addressed only through relevant research focusing on producing low cost,
accessible and innovative solutions.
