Aga
Khan University Hospital reached another milestone in endoscopic surgery
when its team of doctors led by a Professor from Malaysia, successfully
operated on a ten- day old baby, who had a life threatening respiratory
emergency.
Born on June 21 at AKUH, Baby Zaidi had developed a rare condition
called bilateral choannal atresia, which made her unable to breathe
from her nose. As neonates do not breathe from their mouths, the baby's
life was in danger and immediate surgical intervention was required.
The rarity of the condition and the complexity of the required surgery
posed a challenge. Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, Dr
Mubasher Ikram approached the renowned rhinologist, Professor and
Head of ORL-HNS National University Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,
Dato' Dr Balwant Singh Gendeh, who was on a visit to Karachi, to carry
out the complicated surgery at AKUH.
This bold surgical step was the first ever endoscopic repair of bilateral
choannal atresia at AKUH. The surgery was successful with support
from the Departments of Anaesthesia and the NICU.. The baby is now
back to normal nasal breathing.
This unique surgery is a step forward for AKUH where doctors and staff
have gained valuable experience in neonatal and endoscopic surgery.
One of the few teaching hospitals in the world to be ISO 9001 certified,
AKUH combines high quality clinical service with compassionate, ethical,
accessible, high quality and individualistic patient care that meets
the needs or expectations of our patients, their families and others
whom we serve.
