The graduation ceremony of the first cohort of MA
in Education and International Development (EID) Programme offered
by the Institute of Education, University of London (IoE-UoL) in
collaboration with Aga Khan University – Institute for Educational
Development (AKU-IED) was held at Aga Khan University on Friday.
This programme is offered through online and distance learning mode
and is supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat, London, which
allocated scholarships to students from South Asia for developing
their capacity in the areas of health, leadership and management,
and economics of education. The participants of the programme are
from the government and non-government agencies as well as candidates
form outside Pakistan.

Mr Hamish Daniel, British Deputy High Commissioner
was the chief guest at the occasion. The graduation ceremony was
presided over by Lady Vallance, Chair of Council of IoE-UoL. Also
present at the occasion were Ambassador Saidullah Khan Dehlavi,
Chairman of AKU Board of Trustees; Professor Dylan Wiliam, Deputy
Director of IoE-UoL; Mr Firoz Rasul, AKU President; Dr David Taylor,
Acting Provost of AKU; Dr Muhammad Memon, Director AKU-IED; and
Dr Anil Khamis, Course Leader for the MA programme. Eighteen of
the twenty graduates were conferred degrees for successfully completing
their two-year programme, while two overseas candidates could not
participate in the ceremony.

Professor Dylan Wiliam in his speech highlighted
the MA EID programme as one of the best examples of the IoE-UoL’s
international dimension. He further added that this postgraduate
programme, which has a focus on education and international development
with optional studies in economics and health, has brought together
AKU-IED and IoE-UoL.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr Firoz Rasul, AKU President,
said that the MA EID programme has substantially enhanced the participants’
understanding and capacity for conducting and engaging in research
and scholarship activities. It has enabled them to appreciate and
understand international development perspectives and issues. Mr
Rasul acknowledged the importance of AKU’s collaborations
with international institutions for capacity building of its faculty
and staff through professional development programmes such as MA
EID programme.

Lady Vallance in her closing address mentioned that
the Institute has students from over 90 countries around the world
and quoted such diversity to be a valuable source of learning for
the Institute. She added that the presentation ceremony was also
an occasion of reunion for the graduates and a celebration of the
Institute as a global community.
